ISLE OF WIGHT JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS DETAILED

Street parties, fetes, concerts and regattas will be on the agenda next bank holiday weekend as the council unveils its Jubilee preparations.

According to the Isle of Wight County Press, the main bulk of events will take place at Ryde’s Appley Park, from Saturday June 2 through Monday June 4.

Those inhabiting Isle of Wight hotels and planning to visit the site can expect to enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere, complete with marching bands and vintage vehicles.

While it might seem like Ryde is taking the spotlight to celebrate the Queen’s 60-year-reign, there are actually dozens of events taking place all across the island. St Blasius Church in Shanklin will be holding an 8 day exhibition to mark the Jubilee from June 2-10 featuring flower displays and a celebration of the past 60 years.

Most notably are the towns and villages hosting one of the 3,000 beacons scattered across the island. These are due to be lit up in sync with one another before a mammoth fireworks display takes place on Sunday 3 June.

Bell ringers across the Island’s 14 bell towers will also show their support. They too will sound off together between noon and 3pm, also on the Sunday.

Street parties meanwhile will be a dime a dozen, with no less that 60 events being hosted in the island’s open spaces and community buildings.

Isle of Wight Council chairman Councillor Susan Scoccia, commented on iwight.com: “The island is really rising to the occasion and pulling out all the stops for the Diamond Jubilee.

“It is wonderful to see communities joining together to organise street parties and larger organisations putting on events to be proud of in celebration of our country’s history and heritage.”
