DRIVE IS ON TO MAKE ISLE OF WIGHT FIRST SUSTAINABLE REGION

Three new green initiatives were launched last week in the hope of making the Isle of Wight the first sustainable region in Britain, reports iwcp.co.uk.

The initiatives were launched by community interest company, Ecoisland, which has teamed up with Toyota GB to offer low-carbon transport, meaning people taking Isle of Wight breaks can relax when travelling across the island, knowing they are helping the environment.

The plan predominantly comprises a conversion to alternatively-fuelled vehicles in order to de-carbonise the island and make sure it is fully self-sufficient by 2020.

A GREENback card scheme was introduced on the island last year, which rewards residents for acting in a ‘green-friendly’ manner, according to eco-island.org. The points equate to discounts on a whole host of good and services.

David Green, CEO and founder of the Ecoisland Partnership told greenabode.co.uk: “There is no manual for this endeavour nor are there any existing examples to follow. However that too has its advantages- there is nobody to tell us that it cannot be done.”

Mr Green also released a statement via eco-island.org, saying that he hoped the Isle of Wight could become a ‘pioneer’ for sustainability in Britain and that it could provide a ‘beacon of hope’ to other communities trying to be more nature-friendly.
